Free Touch Typing Speed Test

Improve your typing speed with our FREE typing speed test!

Speed comes naturally when your unconscious brain has taken over the skill and you can type without looking down and searching for the keys. This is what touch typing is about – typing by touch, not by sight. Touch typing is all about muscle memory; your fingers move without conscious thought – this part of your brain is much faster, and frees your mind, your conscious brain, to focus only on what you want to say. Touch typing means you can be up to 10 times faster. This touch type test is designed to accurately measure your typing speed.

How fast can you type?

What Is a Good Typing Speed?

Many children struggle to type even 10 words per minute. But a confident 11-year-old who practice touch typing can reach 50–60 words per minute. That means they can do an hour’s work in just 10 minutes.

Most adults who use the “hunt and peck” method type at around 20–30 words per minute. By learning touch typing, you can double or even triple that speed and spend much less time on the keyboard.

How Accuracy Makes You Faster

Typing fast isn’t just about speed. It’s about being accurate. Every mistake takes extra time because you have to press:

  • The wrong key.
  • The delete key.
  • The right key.

That’s at least three key presses instead of one.

To boost accuracy:

  • Always use the same fingers for the same keys.
  • Stick to one keyboard layout to build muscle memory.
  • Focus on being accurate, speed will come with practice.

With these habits, your typing will become faster, easier, and more efficient.

How can I improve touch typing?

Type by touch, not by looking at the keys. Use the right fingers for each letter and practise often. At first, this may feel slow. That is normal. You are training your hands to move without thinking too much.

Touch typing is a physical skill. It is more like learning a sport or playing an instrument than studying in a classroom. Your fingers need time to learn the right movements. The more you practise, the more natural typing starts to feel.

Englishtype helps you learn faster. The lessons use common words, clear steps and short exercises. These build good habits from the start. You learn where each key is and which finger should press it.

Try not to rush too soon. Good typing starts with control. Once your accuracy improves, your speed will follow. With steady practice, you’ll soon see your words per minute increase and your mistakes go down.

Touch typing test

This free test shows how fast and accurate your typing is. It helps you see your current level before you start practising or after you have completed lessons.

You can make mistakes during the test, but you must fix them before the timer ends. This makes the test more useful. It shows how errors affect your typing speed in real time.

You can also choose your age group. This gives you words that are suitable for children or adults. The test uses real, everyday words, along with a few less common ones. These help you practise letters such as Q and Z.

By taking the test more than once, you can track your progress. You can see if your speed, accuracy and confidence are improving over time.

Should I practise regularly?

Yes. Daily practice is the best way to build typing skill. Short, frequent sessions work better than long ones.

A few minutes each day can make a real difference. Small breaks also help your brain rest and remember more.

Englishtype teaches correct finger use and builds speed and accuracy with every session. Keep practising, stay patient and your typing will become smoother and faster.
